  1. Quote: "All teachers worry about whether their students will be interested in what they have to teach"(215).

Fact- Thirty-eight percent of teens aged sixteen to eighteen said that high school is easy.

Question: What are some effective ways to obtain order in one's classroom?

  2. Chapter 7 was all about one of the issues I've had trouble coming to terms with since I decided that maybe teaching was for me. That issue is getting the kids to pay attention and dealing with the trouble makers.
The Quote I found most interesting in this chapter was from Perrone when he says "All of us have some difficult days, when things dont go as well as we would like, when we feel discouraged , sometimes angry at the behavior of our students." It makes me wonder about all the teachers that quit, are they just not good at disciplinary actions or are they just not going to deal with other peoples kids?
This leads into my question of "What is the proper way to deal with troubled or trouble making kids?" I hope this gets ironed out when I attend the school soon.
My fact, which is disturbing, is that 200,000 kids are spanked , each year but the disturbing part is that 19% of them are disabled. Who in gods name would spank a disabled child? Why are these people in a career field based around youth? Why do the parents let this happen?

  3. Question: Is there any present psychological studies or knowledge to explain this... if a difference in physical appearance (such build, gender, race, etc.) causes a behavior difference among students?

Quote: "And mean what you say- if you tell someone to sit down or you will write them up, then you better do it. They need to be able to trust your word in all areas." (225) Students need to trust what you are teaching to them will be beneficial in their life and your teaching is legit not deceitful. And if a teachers bark is bigger than their bite, and they do not stand on their word, they will get eaten alive by students.

Fact: "More than 2,100 students were expelled in the 2003-2004 school year for possessing a firearm at school." (224) Any case where a student has a firearm at school could be disastrous. I hope that schools can step up their law enforcement and security; because a federal, state, or city gun ban will not keep criminals from having illegally acquired firearms.

  4. Zero tolerance? I think to not have any tolerance for a student acting up is the wrong approach. How could anyone believe this is the way to go?

“If a student is bored and disengaged in class, is it the teacher’s fault for not finding the right way to reach the student or the student’s fault for not trying hard enough, or both?” I think it would be both, there are some subjects that are hard to be amusing, for instance the kreb cycle is hard to work with and make interesting, but the teacher must work with the students and try anything to make it work. Then the student must work to try the best to listen, I know as a student there are times where I don’t want to listen so I don’t try.

I also found the list of principles for developing and maintaining productive classrooms interesting. I think any first time teacher would find that useful.

  5. Quote: In a National Governors Association survey, 38% of teens aged 16 to 18 said that high schools is easy, whereas 6% responded that it is hard. In another survey one in five high school students said they were not motivated or inspired to work hard. Nearly 70% said that high school expectations are moderate to low. (pg 216)

Question: does a greater emphasis on assessment challenge students and teachers to focus on the results of their effort? (pg 230)

Fact: More than 200,000 school children are paddled, spanked, or subjected to other physical punishment each year. 19% are students with disabilities. Although 30 states prohibit corporal punishment in public schools, the other 20 allow it in some form. (pg 224)

  11. What can a teacher do to help creat intrinsic motivation rather than relying on extrensic motivation.

John Dewey said, "the subject matter of education consists of bodies of information and of skills that have been worked out in the past; therefore the chief business of the school is to transmit them to a new generation."

Nearly 70% of students said that high school expectations are moderate to low.

Fact; Pg 223 In states making the standardized tests a truely high-stakes graduation requirement, the impact on the drop out rate has been dramatic. In Massachusetts, 71 % of AFrican Americans graduated the year before the tests became a graduation requirement to 59.5% after. Latino's went from 54% to 45%; Asians from 89% to 81%.

  17. My question comes from the apple on page 223, "Do disruptive students infringe on everyone else's learning?" It brings to mind a now retired kindergarten teacher who made the comment to me once that she was going to become an advocate for the "normal" child that gets lost in the classroom. At this point I would have to ask her just who she meant, but at the time I know that she had an especially high maintainence special needs student in her classroom of 32 students and it was making her job extremely difficult. In that case, most definitely yes, the disruptions were taking away from the other children's educational experience.

The fact that caught my attention was from page 224 in the "Did you know" box. More than 200,000 school children are paddled, spanked, or subjected to other physical punishment each year. Nineteen percent are students with disabilities. I would like to know what their disabilities where. But it brings to mind a teacher that I had in middle school, then junior high. He was a mountain of a man, not in bulk, just in build, and he had a habit of throwing students up against the wall if they were exceptionally disruptive. I remember one student in particular that he threw up against the wall in the hallway and ended up busting his arm. I don't know what ever happened to him in the form of reprimand, but I do not recall him being out of the classroom for any length of time, so I don't believe he got any kind of suspension,(The teacher, that is, not the student).

My quote is from the readings at the end of the chapter. Herbert Kohl was talking to a Hispanic speaking student's grandfather about learning English himself. His response was, "Families and cultures could not survive if the children lost their parents' language, and finally that learning what others wanted you to learn can sometimes destroy you." He turned a cultural problem into a personal psychological problem.

  18. Question: Is racism found very often in elementary schools?
Quote: I agree with Vito Perrone when he says, “I don’t particularly like the terms classroom management and discipline…Developing and maintaining productive classrooms seems more appropriate, more useful as a formulation. It creates a more positive discourse.” (225)
Fact: More than 2,100 students were expelled in the 2003-2004 school year for possessing a firearm at school. (224)

  19. ?: If a student is bored and disengaged in class, is it the teacher's fault for not finding the right way to reach the student or the student's fault for not trying hard enough, or both?
quote: "At first I confused not-learning with failing." Herbert Kohl
fact: more than 200,000 school children are paddled, spanked, or subjected to other physical punishment each year.

  20. Quote:"Positive reinforcement system is the single most important tool you have to help students shape appropriate behaviors?
Fact:With passing of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2001, the federal government demands that every state test its students every year and that only students, but also teachers, schools, and school districts, be measured by the results.
Question:As an educator yourself do you believe positive reinforcement works with all of your students or only a certain percentage of students?
