  1. Chapter 8 was an excellent read on how technology has forever changed the way we learn, teach, and share information.
    The fact I found to be most scary is that 20% of all teens have "sexted" or post nude or semi nude photos of themselves on the internet. This is horrifying and I think that parents need to straighten up and monitor their childrens internet and cell phone usage properly, while still allowing their children to have their privacy.
    The question I had is, in what schools are they eliminating text books and paper goods in favor of a completely electronic work space? Is this happening or are we still text book focused?
    The quote that peaked my interest the most is from a study that was carried out in 2000. It says "Girls have specific criticisms of violence in current games as well as the general sense that they would be more interested in games that allowed them to create rather than destroy. When given the opportunity to describe their "ideal" computer game, they talk about how they would value games that involve simulation and identity play. They would rather appreciate opportunites to "work through" real life problems in the simulated world of the screen. Many describe games that would allow them to swap identity or face struggles they have yet to encounter."
    This strikes me for two reasons, one is that this information is now 11 years old and is more than likely horribly outdated. Second, doing some searching on the internet for popular computer and video games I found that 26 percent of world of warcrafts 12 million players are women. Not to discredit this quote, but I asked a few women I know and most of them say they dont mind violent games, but the extremely violent ones are the ones most of them dont care for. I would like to see the study group for this questioned now and see how their views and opinions have changed after video game popularity has sky rocketed since 2000.

  2. Question: Why can't schools survive the impact of computer technology and the changes in learning styles and worldwide connectivity that they bring?

    there is a good and bad aspect of techology is there anyway that we can educate children on the bad and good so that something like sexing is not forgin to them.

  4. Question: With the use of technology it is making information more accessable, but how much of this knowledge are students retaining? How are we going to combat the growing obesity trend in students that I feel has been caused by technology?

    Fact: 83% of teenagers are heavy users of the internet. I actually thought this number would be higher.

    Quote: Pg. 261. Computers can cause passivity- a lack of intiative and inactivityor the too easy acceptance of ideas and opinions of others; many observers worry that computers increase the easy acceptance of outside ideas and opinions with little resistance or thought.
    Fact: Pg. 256. Higher users of technology had a more favorable attitude toward change, were more able to cope with uncertainty and risk, less fatalistic, and had higher levels of motivation, more social participation and greater exposure to communication channels.

  7. As reading this chapter, will there be a point when we all use technology in the near future? Would it be more productive to give an assignment off the computer or TV? Will the students be more willing to learn and actual do the assignment if I was to use the technology?

    On page 260 it says that "69% of kids between the ages 6-14 have TVs in their rooms, 49% have a video gaming system, 46% have a VCR, 37% have DVD players, 35% have cable/satellite, 24% have computers, and 18% have internet access." To me, I can see this as I grew up with all of this but does this get in the way of learning? Are children facing a disability because they have all this technology? Are students using their brains just as much as they did without the technology?

    Something I found interesting was the fact that 50% of the blogs online is posted by teenagers. I did not realize it was so popular among young people. I am amazed.

  8. *A fact I found interesting was in a promising practices box. A school that started the iTECH program, which gives a computer to all middle school and high school students, only had 26% of their students college bound at the beginning of the program. However in 2009 it increased to 94%.

  9. The quote that stood out the most to me in Chapter 8 was in the section about Virtual Bullying. The part that stated "A neighborhood mother had created Josh's MySpace profile and corresponded with Megan allegedly to gain Megan's trust and learn what Megan was saying about her daughter." I thought this was more immature of the mother than protective. I wonder what the mother's exact motives were because she obviously didn't consider the consequences of her actions.
    The fact that shocked me the most was that 50% of teens sent explicit images to people they only know online. Though I'm aware that this happens, this shows that the Internet gives opportunities for youth to expose themselves to strangers that normally would not happen.
    My question is regarding the New Tech high schools. I believe using technology in the classroom is very beneficial at times, but does using technology limit the curriculum? What happens if there are server problems or glitches? Does this set back the entire class from their online projects?

  10. Question: even though the New Tech style of teaching seems to be effective in a highschool setting doesn't it kind of handicap students for college because majority of the work is individual?

    Fact: 51% of teens check social networking sites more than once a day. 22% do it more than 10 times a day.

    Question: If teachers start integrating cell phones into the classrooms, will it get them more excited to learn since they're getting to use their most precious item? Or will it just distract them since they don't have to hide the cell phone anymore?

    If we make our classrooms more focused on technology, will more problems arise? And when do we draw the line on technology in the classroom? I remember when I was in high school and all the classes I had that were in a computer lab, we never paid attention to the teacher; we were always on Facebook and other sites. Even though they tried to block us, we found new ways to break past the firewalls.

  14. I would imagine the downfalls of the digital divide are nearly nonexistent by now when it comes to education, but is that true?

    Papert said traditional schooling, “has an inherent tendency to infantilize children by placing them in a position of having to do as they are told, to occupy themselves with work dictated by someone else an that, moreover, has no intrinsic value-schoolwork is done only because the designer of a curriculum decided that doing the work would shape the doer into a desirable form.”
    In 2003, when the iTECH program began, 23% of Greene Central High School students were college bound, by 2009 that rate increased to 94%.

  16. Fact- (talking about blogging- a 2003 study) "Two- thirds of teenage bloggers provide their age and first name; 60% offer their location and contact information; and 20% divulge their full name" (257) I'm sure these numbers have increased dramatically since 2003.

    Quote- "We want to show teachers how they can use technology to deliver standards-based lessons, and it doesn't have to take over their classrooms." (266) Many people are afraid that technology will take the place of teaching. Nothing will ever take the spot of an actual teacher... But online classes, electronic books, the internet, computers, and many other things have helped aid the process of education.

    Question- Will technology ever completely take over how people are educated? Robot/computer teachers? I guess we will see...

  18. Question: Are cell phones becoming common amongst elementary-aged children?
    Quote: Thomas Edison commented on technology, “I believe that the motion picture is destined to revolutionize our educational system and that in a few years it will supplant largely, if not entirely, the use of textbooks.” (260) It’s amazing how Edison’s predictions have recently been coming true!
    Fact: Surveys have reported that 15% of teens said they have sent explicit images to people they know only online. That’s really alarming!
