    Question: What is a "dame school"?

    -John Dewey was a promoter of progressive education, testing his philosophy and ideas in his Chicago school at the end of the nieteenth century.

    1.In other countries, are their schooling systems similar to ours, such as elementary, middle then high school? And is their cirriculum standard set by thier government or the location in which they live?
    2. "However, it would take more than a 100 years to make the school cirriculum secular by removing religious instruction, bible readings and prayer." (pg. 191)
    3. "Should produce good and patriotic Americans, develop a unique American language and create a unified national spirit." (pg. 181)

    -In the U.S there was high schools,middle schools, and elementary schools by the 1970's.

  11. Question - What exactly is a curriculum package and do teachers have to use them or are they only a suggestion on subjects to be coverd.
    Quote - Contracts for women teachers sometimes did not allow them to socialize with men or be married.
    Fact - The 1988 Tribally Controlled Schools Act gave grants to tribes to operate their own schools.

    Question: While reading the section, After Sputnik I, I wonder what exactly our schools really do for our younger kids that excel in math/science, with no child left behind it seems the intelligent kids are being used a helpers to help out the kids that are not meeting the proper levels. I guess my question is what kind of programs are out there to help with the new math and science technology our country needs today?
    Fact: The U.S. Constitution makes no reference to education.

    QUESTION: In the south when African Americans could not attend White schools. did the state actually allow people to teach children without the proper materials and knowledge? and if so was it illegal? Are did the state not get involved?

  18. --If education was so important to Thomas Jefferson, why didn't he make any legislation to drastically increase federal involvement in the system? Why didn't he set up an example for future generations to follow, instead of placing the burden on the states?

  19. Question: Why did Catholics not feel welcome in schools during the 1830s and 1840s?

    Fact: The first Chinese migrants arrived in California in the 1850s to join the gold rush as free laborers and by 1852, 20,000 had immigrated to California.

  24. Question-In 1867 the Indian Peace Commission said that Native Americans could become American citizens if they gave up their native religions, ways of life, and converted to Christianity. Do you believe in any way that Hispanics are being treated in a similar way?

    Fact-Around 1925, a distinction was made between nursery schools, which were based on child development and psychology, and the day nurseries that served low-income and immigrant families. The nursery schools served a more well-to-do population.

    Informativ fact: By 1900 most teachers in the United States still had not attended normal schools. Many of today state Colleges and Universitys began as normal schools.

    Fact- Early nursery schools were developed in the 1920s and 1930s on what was known from the emerging fields of child development and pshychology.
