Fact: Schools are one of society's institutions that, along with parents, prepare children and youth for their adult roles.

Question: If some school districts base their reputations on how well their students perform on standardized test and how many are admitted to elite universities, what do the schools that don't do this base their reputations on?

-One of the four purposes of school discribed in this chapter is citizenship; it states that almost everyone agrees that schools should help students become good citizens. Although, what defines a good citizen? Shouldn't model citizens be knowledable of the government and society, be active in the community, and respect the rights and human dignity of everyone? That being said, our government at it's invention was based on religion, and to fully respect someone, one needs to understand their culture; but the teaching of creationism is not allowed in school, and for one to be a model citizen they need to be taught the differnces in the cultures around then and all of the religions the world has to offer. Why isn't this being taught in schools today if one of THE purposes of our schools is to be good citizens?

--Instead of trying to figure out WHY younger people misbehave and not acknowledge when they do something good, adults in America would rather slap harsher punishments on those that step out of line, profile ALL teenagers as "troubled," and ultimately ignore anything they have to say. That just seems to compound the problem even more...
