    Fact- I found it interesting when it talked about how knowledge cannot be transmitted directly from the teacher to the student but by the student.

    Question- Is one philosophy of education better than another or is it okay to be one of the four types compared to the others?

  2. Fact: There are 4 philosophies of education- perennialism, essentialism, romanticism, and progressivism.

    Question: The book says that many teachers develop personal philosophies instead of using the 4 that were mentioned in the book. Is this a good thing or should we just stick with the 4?

    Fact: Essentialism is a uniquely American philosophy of education that began in the 1930's and 1940's as a reaction to what was seen as an overemphasis on a child-centered approach to education and a concern that students were not gaining appropriate and adequate knowledge in schools.

    Fact: Axiology focuses on the nature of what we value and how we value it.

    Question: While I agree with Romantics in the sense that children can learn a lot through their curiosity, are home-schooled children better off or worse off than children who go to an actual school everyday?

    Fact: I found it interesting that students have varying learning styles and what works with one student, it may not work with another.

    Fact: Constructivism is a theory that implies that children must come to their own conclusions and understandings from their experiences. Children must construct their own understandings and then reconstruct these understandings later when new information is received.

    Question: Do you think the traditional classroom environment (where a teacher lectures and students listen) is part of the constructionist theory?

    Question: I feel our younger generation is facing ethical problems that stems from poor family life. How do we as teachers teach them good and bad when they are learning bad habits from home.

  24. Question: Why do you think teachers don't report things like child abuse and sexual harassment more often?

    Fact: Not many years ago, unmarried teachers who became pregnant were routinely dismissed from their teaching positions. Similarly, once a student was discovered to be either married, pregnant, or both, she was dismissed.
