EDU 202 / 203 -- MWSU -- Spring 2010 -- Dr. Hendrix
Assignment: Chpt. 10; Due: Wednesday, March 3, 2010
1. The purpose of studying history is to learn from our mistakes. Why then do Americans seem to be unlearned and continue to repeat mistakes? Is it a lack of education and knowledge of the past or human nature to error? If we as a nation are continually ignoring our past, is it not a waste of time to continue emphasizing and insisting our youth study it? Would not their time be better spent on mathematics and/or the Three (3) Rs?!? (Txtbk. Chpt. 10)
2. “Segregation was wrong when it was forced by white people, and I believe it is still wrong when it is requested by black people.” -Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther King and Civil Rights Leader (Txtbk. p. 350, Chpt. 10)
3. Several Supreme Court decisions during the 1900s dramatically reversed school desegregation plans ordered by lower courts, thereby eliminating much of the pressure to desegregate schools. In these rulings, the Court essentially conceded that practical limits exist as to what a federal court can do to remedy prior discrimination; once school districts have corrected the initial racial imbalances, they are not required to remedy subsequent imbalances caused by demographic changes. (i.e., Double-Jeopardy = cannot be found guilty or penalized for the same trial/accusation/crime twice.) (Txtbk. p. 349, Chpt. 10)
In the South during colonial times, education of the poor and orphans was often undetaken by the Anglican Church or by relgious groups such as the Society for the Propogation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts.
"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and will never be." Thomas Jefferson
